Congress stages protest against poor cleanliness, waterlogging in Gurugram

The Congress party staged a strong protest against poor cleanliness and waterlogging in Gurugram and dumped garbage outside the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) office in Sector-34 on Monday.

The agitation saw the participation of senior Congress leader and film actor Raj Babbar, who accused the BJP Government of turning Gurugram into a “garbage village.” The protest was led by Congress District Urban President and Rural President Vardhan Yadav, along with local party workers. Demonstrators alleged that garbage piles can be found in almost every street and locality of the city, while residents continue to suffer due to administrative negligence.

Raj Babbar, who also contested the Lok Sabha elections from Congress, warned that the party has given the MCG 15 days to improve the cleanliness system. “If this system does not improve within 15 days, Congress will intensify its agitation with a bigger protest,” he said.

Criticising the ruling BJP, Yadav said that despite having a “triple engine Government” — the MCG, the state, and the Centre — the condition of Gurugram has worsened. “The Municipal Corporation, State Government, and central government are all with BJP, yet Gurugram has been reduced to a garbage dump,” he said.

Congress leaders also alleged that while the administration is prompt in collecting taxes and taking action against small hawkers, it turns a blind eye towards powerful encroachers.

“The livelihood of poor labourers is being destroyed by removing hawkers and kiosks with JCBs, while illegal encroachments by influential people remain untouched. This double standard is injustice to the public,” said Rural President Vardhan Yadav.

The party claimed that responsible ministers, MLAs, and the mayor are “sleeping peacefully” while citizens continue to face mounting problems of waste management and waterlogging.
