The Congress on Tuesday sniffed a conspiracy in the high prices of onions before the Assembly polls in four States and their steep drop just the day after elections, especially in Delhi where it lost after 15 years of rule.
“I am not suggesting but I am not distancing from it as well. After all, there was something that within a day (after the polls), the price of onion came down. As soon as elections were over, what was the voice that worked and things started becoming cheap. Onion was Rs100 a kilo before elections and now it is Rs25 a kilo,” party spokesperson Raj Babbar said at AICC briefing.
He was replying to a query as to whether he was suggesting some conspiracy, which led to such results for Congress in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. On Sunday, party president Sonia Gandhi had acknowledged “price rise” as one of the factors for the poor show of Congress.
Babbar also said that the party would look into complaints that indicated saboteurs and others who worked against the interests of the party including those in Delhi.
Babbar’s remarks were significant given the fact that internal sabotage as also price rise were prominent reasons given by party leaders for the poll debacle during a meeting with party Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday.
