Cong says tie-up with AIADMK possible

Hardly 24 hours after it submitted a memorandum to Governor K Rosaiah listing the “massive misdeeds and corruption” by Ministers in the AIADMK Government, the Congress said the possibility of an alliance with the AIADMK could not be ruled out. “There is an equal possibility of a Congress-AIADMK tie-up. It has to be finalised by the Congress High Command. The channel of communication between the AIADMK leadership (read Jayalalithaa) and the Congress is always open,” a prominent Congress leader in Tamil Nadu told The Pioneer.

“Yes, we have submitted a memorandum against the AIADMK Government. But that does not mean that we are enemies. Agitations and allegations are part of politics,” said the leader, who did not want his name to be quoted. The leader said Jayalalithaa has good friends in the Congress High Command. Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, which were in a state of slumber following the rout in the 2014 lok Sabha election, have got re-energised over the last one month. Political commentators like N Kalyanasundaram attribute this to the long absence of J Jayalalithaa, from the scene. Jayalalithaa got disqualified as Chief Minister and MlA following her conviction by the Bangalore Special Court in the disproportionate asset case in September 2014.

Though initially everything was going smooth for her chosen successor O Panneerselvan, incidents like the suicide of Muthukumarasamy, the agricultural department engineer,  in February allegedly due to the harassment by the then Minister SS Krishnamoorthy landed the AIADMK in trouble. Though both Krishnamoorthy and his associate were arrested in connection with the suicide, the AIADMK Government has failed to convince the people about its seriousness in dealing with the accused.

last Sunday saw DMDK leader Vijayakanth on a whirlwind tour in Chennai city calling on leaders of various opposition parties barring Ramadoss of the PMK. Not to be left behind, the DMK, which has been weakened by squabbles in the first family of the party, has announced a series of rallies and demonstrations against the AIADMK government’s “corrupt practices”. MK Stalin, the scion of the Karunanidhi clan wrote an open letter to Chief Minister Panneerselvam alleging that law and order has broken down in the State.
