Cong MPs raise NGT chiefs appointment, BJP spars over starvation deaths in Delhi

While a BJP member in the lok Sabha on Thursday  demanded action against the political owners of a private jet that crashed in Mumbai last month, killing five people including two pilots, Congress MP alleged that Government appointed a former Supreme Court judge who diluted SC/ST laws as National Green Tribunal Chief as BJP MPs raised the issue of starvation deaths in the national Capital.

In another issue, the Opposition to the appointment of a former Supreme Court judge who was part of a bench that had “diluted” a law on atrocities against SCs STs as National Green Tribunal chairman, echoed in Parliament.  Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and his party colleague K Suresh said the appointment  indicated the BJP-led Government’s support to his judgement.

Kharge alleged during zero hour  that the government has “rewarded” him.

Dalit bodies and almost all major political parties have said the judgement has “diluted and weakened the law”. The government appointed him as the NGT chairman immediately after he retired from the top court early this month.

BJP MP from Mumbai Kirit Somaiya demanded action against the owners of a private jet that crashed in Mumbai last month, killing five people including two pilots.

He said the owner of the company owning the private plane was  “ very powerful politician” and therefore not even an FIR has been filed in the case as he said  Prabhat Kathuria, husband of co- pilot Marya Zuberi who died in the crash, is running from pillar to post for justice.

Four crew members including two pilots and a pedestrian had lost their lives in the June 27 mishap when the 12-seater plane crashed into an under-construction building in the Ghatkopar area of Mumbai.

Raising the matter during the Zero Hour, Kirit Somaiya alleged that the aircraft was 10 years old.

Kathuria met Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu Thursday, who assured him of a fair investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued last month, Khaturia had questioned the fitness of the aircraft.

Kathuria said his wife had mentioned to him that the weather conditions on that day were not conducive for a test flight to be conducted for a small plane like Beechcraft King Air C90 aircraft.

He had also said UY Aviation, the owners of the aircraft, “seem to have completely disregarded their responsibility to check whether such a plane should go off the ground”.

The death of three children in Delhi reportedly due to starvation was raised in the lok Sabha by BJP members who attacked the Aam Aadmi Party government for them.

Raising the matter, Ramesh Bidhuri, Parvesh Verma, and Maheish Girri claimed there was a “ration scam” in Delhi, resulting in subsidised grains not reaching the poor.

The area where the tragedy occurred falls in the constituency of Delhi’s deputy Chief Minister, Bidhuri said attacking the AAP Government.
