Cong hails Somen Mitra's homecoming

The Congress has welcomed dissident Trinamool Congress MP Somen Mitra’s resignation from the lok Sabha insisting the party would be more than happy to take back the veteran leader into its fold.

Mitra who had on Wednesday resigned from lok Sabha later announced his comeback into the Congress. The former PCC president was likely to rejoin his parent party that he had left in 2008 “possibly on January 21.”

“We are extremely happy at his homecoming and we are sure his rejoining the Congress will give a new fillip to our organisational set up” said current PCC president Pradip Bhattacharya adding his party would “definitely consider giving Somenda a ticket

contest the lok Sabha elections if he wants.”

Mitra who has never lost any elections in the past 42 years and was elected to lok Sabha on Trinmool ticket in 2009 from Diamond Harbour seat in South 24 Parganas was unlikely to seek re-election from the same seat “though it is comparatively an easier seat going by the erosions the Trinamool Congress has seen in its support base in the district.”

Insiders, however, said if Mitra did not contest from Diamond Harbour he would file nomination from his home turf North Kolkata currently held by Trinamool Congress heavyweight leader Sudip Bandopadhyay.
