Cong demands President's Rule in West Bengal

The Bengal Congress on Tuesday demanded imposition of President’s Rule in the State where law and order had not only broken down but was gone into the hands of dreaded criminals.

“Bengal under Mamata Banerjee is a failed State. The people of this State can only be rescued via President’s Rule,” PCC president Adhir Chowdhury said on Tuesday soon after meeting party president Rahul Gandhi with reports of rampant pre-poll violence a day before.

“I demand President’s Rule in the State. Without President’s Rule being imposed no one will be able to exercise their democratic right. This is the need of the hour,” he said adding he had brought the entire situation to the notice of Gandhi.

“I told him how Mamata Banerjee’s men attacked the Congress, left and BJP workers alike. Even senior leaders like Congress Chief Whip Manoj Bhattacharya were not spared. He was badly beaten up on Monday. Party MP AH Khan Chowdhury’s car was bombed.” The Malda MP narrowly escaped the attack.

At least 500 people were injured and one person was killed on Monday when armed Trinamool men descended on the streets to stop the opposition parties from filing nomination in Panchayat elections.
