Cong demand criminal case against PM, Maha CM

Upping the ante on distressed farmer Shankar Bhaurao Chayare’s suicide at Yavatmal in Vidarbha region, the Opposition Congress on Thursday demanded that a criminal case be registered against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for abetting the suicide by Chayare.

On a day when Chayare’s family members finally relented, took his body from the Yavatmal Government hospital and performed the final rites in their native village of Rajurwadi, former Chief Minister and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Ashok Chavan said: “Chayare’s family has demanded that a criminal case be registered against Prime Minister Modi. We support the stand taken by Chayare’s family. We would also want the police register a criminal case against both Modi and Chief Minister Fadnavis for abetting Chayare’s suicide”.

Chayare’s elder daughter Jaishri had gone to a local police station on Tuesday and made an application seeking registration of a case against Prime Minister Modi on the ground that her father had in his suicide note squarely held the Modi Government responsible for her father’s death.

Slamming the Chief Minister for not visiting Chayare’s family,  Chavan said: “ The Chief Minister has not visited the family. Nor has the Yavatmal Guardian Minister has bothered to visit the affected family for the past two days. Instead, the State Government has chosen to depute local social activists Kishore Tiwari to visit the family and hand over a cash compensation to the family”. On Wednesday, Chayare’s family members rejected a compensation of Rs 100,000  offered to them on behalf of the Maharashtra Government by Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban (VNSM) Mission Chairman Kishore Tiwari.
