The Congress, on Wednesday, attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party Governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh over inflation claiming that the victory of the saffron party seems to have given them licence to loot the public.

Attacking the BJP here on Wednesday afternoon, Congress national spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh asked whether the victory in the election gave a licence to “rob” the common man's pocket.

Gaurav said that due to the farmers' movement, the price of a bag of potash urea had increased by 21 per cent. He said the 50 kg urea bag that used to cost Rs 1,200 was now Rs 1,300.

“Earlier the good morning message was received, now the WhatsApp message informs that petrol/diesel prices have increased by 80 paise,” he said. Gaurav said Rs 14,700 crore more would have to be paid in diesel.

“There are 26 crore families living in the country. In the last eight years, every Indian family has given Rs 1 lakh in the name of fuel tax,” he said.

Vallabh claimed that petrol and diesel prices remained stable due to elections, but since then they had increased by about Rs 10 per litre.

He said that Congress would protest against inflation in Lucknow on Thursday.
