The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India alleging violation of Model Code of Conduct by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ahead of the November 19 bypolls in the State.

APCC president and Rajya Sanjay MP Ripun Bora submitted a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner of India on Thursday appealing action in this regard.

The APCC memorandum alleged that while Union Minister Gadkari and CM Sonowal announced mega projects for Assam on Monday last, State Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced a slew of soaps for the people at Dongkamokam area under Baithalangso legislative Assembly constituency on Thursday during a rally.

“Sarma today announced that 1,100 youth of Baithalangso and Karbi Anglong will be appointed in Diphu medical college. Further, the Minister also said that the Government will announce a Hill university in Karbi Anglong followed by an Engineering College in Baithalangso,” Bora said in the memorandum.

The senior Congressman furthersaid that these all are done intentionally to influence the voters of Baithalangso, which is going to bypoll on November 19.

The APCC president also urged the Election Commission to ask the Assam government to stop giving advertisements in print and electronic media announcing schemes in the run up to the bypolls.

On November 19, bypoll will take place for lakhimpur lok Sabha and Baithalangso legislative assembly constituencies. The counting of votes will take place on November 22.
