Cong accuses Centre of saffronising varsities

Upping the ante against the BJP over the BHU crisis, the Congress on Tuesday alleged that all the good institution’s including the prestigious IITs and IIMs have been undergoing saffronisation under the present regime at the Centre through the means of anarchy.

The party alleged that there is a definite pattern in the violence carried out in BHU and demanded that an all-party committee be set up to probe into the police lathi-charge on students.

"Yeh ghatna mamuli nahi hai (This is not an ordinary incident)," senior Congress leaders and Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar said at AICC briefing. He alleged that the incident only reflects the same "modus operandi" as was experienced in University of Hyderabad and in the JNU. "If it has to be a credible probe, an all-party parliamentary probe team should visit BHU campus and submit a report to the Centre," he said.

Babbar said the BHU vice-chancellor Prof Girish Chandra Tripathi should be booked for his failure to protect girl students on the campus. Babbar said like the owners of Ryan International School in Gurgaon, who failed to protect their student who was murdered on the school premises, the BHU VC should be booked for not addressing the problems of students.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who gave the slogan of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao', should have stopped and listened to the problems of girl students. "On daughters' day, girls were beaten up with lathis...They received inhumane treatment. Our Prime Minister was in Varanasi when they (students) were staging dharna, he should have come at least to take a selfie with them," he said.
