'Conduct training programme for judicial officers in cyber crimes'

The Centre has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Police Academy to train members of the lower judiciary in handling cyber crimes.

With cyber crimes seeing an upward trend in the recent past, the Department of Justice has written to CBI and the National Police Academy “to conduct training programmes for judicial officers to sensitise on cyber crimes and related issues.”

Recently, a similar exercise was conducted by the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal for judges of the Supreme Court where sessions were addressed by National Security Advisor and RBI Governor among others to sensitise judges on matters related to finance and national security among other issues.

Official sources in the Ministry said that of late, cyber world is increasingly used by individuals and groups to spread anti-India sentiments or promote ‘jihadi’ content. Also, another area of expertise required by courts relates to pornography, sources added.

Besides, use of cyber tools is also crucial to detect crimes and track down criminals. Keeping these aspects in mind and to keep abreast with developments in cyber laws, the Government felt the need to facilitate judges with all this information.

The training module is yet to be prepared as the effort will be to strengthen the capability of trial court judges to handle cyber crimes which are technical in nature. The mode of such training could either be through conferences or seminars that may be hosted at National Judicial Academy.
