Coastal States on high alert over possible terror strike

The Intelligence Bureau has issued an alert saying at least 10 Pakistani terrorists have sneaked into Tamil Nadu via Sri lanka to carry out some “sensational action” in the State and other coastal areas.

Following inputs received by the IB from the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Chennai, the agency has alerted all the coastal States to heighten vigil particularly around vital installations and historical shrines.

The IB has also advised the States to look out for the Pak terrorists. The agencies have also hyper-activated the call and data interceptions systems in their bid to find clues on the whereabouts the terrorists and their possible designs.

Intelligence reports suggest the lashkar-e-Tayyaba has operationalised its marine wing this year after training a number of jehadis to carry out terror attacks in coastal areas of India. The idea of a marine wing was conceptualised in 2006 and the terror outfit has created significant infrastructure and logistics for training jehadis in its tanzeems and carrying out spectacular action.

Apart from historical religious places in the States with coastline, a large number of vital installations including facilities of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and defence establishments dot the coastal areas. Key economic establishments like ports and stock exchanges are also on the radar of the terror groups.

Key affiliate organisations of Pak jehadi groups including that of the leT are located in South India pointing to the lurking threat in the region. This besides, the jehadi groups have also made inroads into the coastal regions of Sri lanka to sneak in their cadres as well as route Fake Indian currency notes (FICN) through the coastal route.
