The Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigating the multi-crore coal scam has issued summons to two top IPS officers from Bengal to appear before it in Delhi on September 26 and 28.
According to sources among the officers summoned by the ED is an Additional Director General of Police and a Deputy Commissioner of Police. While the DCP has been asked to appear in ED’s Delhi office on September 26, the ADG has been summoned on September 28. The two officials could not however be contacted for their reactions.
Sources also said that the central agency has approached an “appropriate court” seeking search warrants against the said officials.
Last month the ED had summoned eight Bengal IPS officers including ADG (CID) Gyanwant Singh, Koteswara Rao, S Selvamurugan, Shyam, Singh, Rajeev Mishra, Sukesh Kumar and Tathagato Basu. All but two officials had responded to the ED summons last month.
Reacting to Tuesday’s summons a senior from the leader Trinamool Congress said it was all part of the BJP government’s vendetta politics to malign the TMC.
Incidentally the Criminal Investigation Department of Bengal has recently made some breakthrough in the cow smuggling cases conducting raids at premises of jailed cattle scam kingpin Enamul Haq.
From the raids the CID allegedly recovered some incriminating documents that could turn the of needle suspicion on some officials of the BSF which functions under the central government. The CBI had last month arrested senior TMC leader Anubrata Mondal and party strongman for his alleged role in cow smuggling.
Meanwhile, in a separate development the chargesheet filed by the ED in recruitment scam tended to perforate the claims of jailed former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee that he was in no way related to the huge cash and gold found from the apartments of his close aide Arpita Chatterjee.
Two prove its point the ED claims in the chargesheet that the former minister was the nominee in the 31 LIC certificates recovered from Arpita’s possession. Besides yearly premium of about Rs 1.5 crore was paid for the LIC policies and all that amount went from the account of Chatterjee. To buttress its arguments the ED has placed some SMS --- indicating payment of premiums --- received in Chatterjee’s mobile numbers.
