Welcoming the Raghuram Rajan panel report ranking Bihar among India’s least advanced States, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said that doors were now open for more help to us.

“I welcome this panel’s report as it means the doors are now open for more help to us and that is what we’ve demanding for long. It’s a step forward”, said Kumar.

He also said that they’ve been saying that new parameters have to be implemented for granting special status to States like Bihar.

The committee was set up under then Chief Economic Adviser Raghuram Rajan, now RBI Governor, amid continuous demand from Kumar that Bihar be granted special category status as a backward State.

While using a ‘Multi Dimensional Index (MDI), the Rajan report which was released by Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday declared Bihar along with Odisha as among the least developed States and Goa and Kerala as the most developed States.

Apparently pleased with the report, Kumar also congratulated the people of Bihar for creating a nationwide impact with their battle for right to development. Earlier, the ruling party JD(U) had submitted a signatures of over one crore people to the Central Government demanding special status to the State. However, the former alliance partner of Kumar, the BJP leaders said there was nothing in the report to cheer about.

“Its like khoda pahar, nikali chuhiya..there is nothing in the report to cheer about”, reacted former Deputy chief minister and senior state BJP leader Shushil Kumar Modi. Modi also emphatically said that had there been any fund allocated for the development of Bihar it would have been better but “there is no such thing in the report”.

The state Congress party leaders, however, said that its all because the Central government cared for Bihar and its people.

Noted economist of the state Prof N K Chaudhury too said that though “it’s a step forward in the direction of help to the state but it would be remain to see when, how and what will be given to Bihar in the backdrop of this report”.

“Abhi Dilli bahut dur hai …but yes, it should be seen as a positive sign for all of us”, he added further.
