BJP threatens TMC with libel

The BJP on Tuesday roared back at Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for making derogatory remarks against its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and threatened to bring defamation suit against her if her party did the same against him for questioning the connections of her paintings with chit-fund king pin Sudipto Sen.

A day after the Trinamool Congress threatened libel suit against Modi for throwing an open question at an election rally at Sreerampur wondering as to who was the person who purchased her paintings for Rs 1.80 crore a livid Chief Minister had hurled uncouth remarks at him calling him an “arrogant” and “dangerous devil” who had “mischievous intentions” in Bengal.

Her Cabinet colleague Amit Mitra went a step ahead saying his party would file a defamation suit against Modi if he did not apologise for his remarks against Banerjee. In a retaliatory attack Bengal BJP president Rahul Sinha threatened a similar libel suit against the Trinamool chief for her derogatory remarks against Modi.

He said “Mr Modi had only put a question and did not make a statement for which the CM has used most derogatory remarks against him. We will file a defamation suit against them if they do the same.”

The BJP leaders quoted the income returns filed by the TMC showing receipt of more than Rs 6 crore on account of selling paintings. “Why don’t they explain as to who bought these paintings and for how muchIJ The people want answers and the party cannot ignore these questions for long,” Sinha said.

Meanwhile, jailed Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh on Tuesday alleged the Chief Minister was trying to protect the people connected with the Saradha scam. The journalist-turned-MP who was being taken to a local court told the media that “the Trinamool Government, its Chief Minister and the police are trying to protect the accused in the Saradha case” alleging further that the police were being used to destroy the evidences in the multi-crore scam case.

On Sudipto Sen’s statement made on Monday that he did not purchase any painting of Banerjee the jailed MP said that the Saradha chief had earlier told him in the jail certain things that were totally in variance with what he said on Monday.
