CM hands over ex-gratia to families of Satya Niketan collapse, Tughlakabad fire victims

Four names, four families, four lives cut short in a building that came down in Satya Niketan in September. On Wednesday, the grief was impossible to undo.

Still, it found a Government cheque: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta personally handed ex-gratia assistance to the families left behind by that collapse, along with others marked by fire, drowning, and a pandemic that already feels like another era.

The Chief Minister distributed the cheques on Wednesday to families affected by four separate tragedies in the Capital, including the Satya Niketan building collapse, the Tughlakabad fire, the drowning incident in the Jasola drain, and the family of a Municipal Corporation of Delhi worker who died serving as a COVID warrior during the pandemic. The families of Akshat Singh Yadav, Arpit Jha, Abhishek Kumar and Surendra Singh, all of whom died in the Satya Niketan building collapse on September 7, 2026, each received ex-gratia assistance of `10 lakh.

For the Tughlakabad fire, the Government distributed `10 lakh each to the families of those who died, `2 lakh to those who were injured, and `20,000 each to two people who sustained minor injuries in the blaze. The family of the person who died in the drowning incident in the Jasola drain received ex-gratia assistance of `5 lakh.

Separately, as a mark of respect for those who served the public during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government extended financial assistance to the family of Omvati, an MCD worker who died while serving as a COVID warrior. The Government distributed the assistance among her two sons and three daughters.

The Chief Minister said the loss of a loved one could never truly be undone, but in such moments it remained the Government’s responsibility to stand by affected families and extend whatever support it could. She said the ex-gratia assistance was meant to offer financial relief during a difficult period and reassure families they were not alone, with the Delhi Government standing by them at every step.

On the assistance extended to Omvati’s family, the Chief Minister said it reflected the Government’s gratitude toward those who lost their lives while performing their duties during the pandemic’s most difficult phase.

The Chief Minister said the Government’s objective went beyond financial assistance alone, aiming to reassure and support families as they coped with their grief. She said every life was precious, and that understanding the pain of families who lose loved ones in accidents, and standing by them, was a responsibility shared by both Government and society.

She added that the Delhi Government remained committed to extending assistance to affected families under applicable rules, keeping public welfare and human sensitivity central to its approach.

The ceremony brought together families whose losses span different kinds of tragedy: a workplace death during a pandemic, a building that gave way beneath young lives, a fire that claimed more than one victim, and a single death by drowning, each now marked, however inadequately, by the same Government gesture extended on a single Wednesday in the Capital.
