Chittoor: NHRC team visits encounter spot

Published on:

A five-member team of National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday visited the scene of last month’s encounter in which 20 woodcutters were killed in Seshachalam forest of Chittoor district.

The team, which arrived in Tirupati two days ago, went to Sachninodi Banda and Chikatigalakoni, the two places where the 20 people were killed on April 7. NHRC team led by commission member Dattu met the officials of police and forest departments and recorded their statements on the encounter incident.

“We are gathering the information from the officials and will submit a detailed report to the NHRC,” Dattu told the media.

The team is likely to meet the families of the deceased.

NHRC decided to conduct its own enquiry after coming down heavily on Andhra Pradesh Government’s refusal to order a judicial probe. Apart from NHRC, the National Commission on Scheduled Tribes has also demanded a CBI or judicial enquiry into the killings.
