Nalini Chidambaram, the lawyer wife of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, her son
Karti Chidambaram and daughter-in-law Srinidhi Karti Chidambaram appeared in a Chennai court in connection with the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) Imposition of Tax Act of 2015 (known as Black Money Act 2015) case filed against them by the Department of Income Tax.
The Income Tax department initiated prosecution proceedings against Nalini, Karti and Srinidhi under the Black Money Act 2015 for not disclosing details of a property purchased jointly by them at a cost of 5.35 lakh Pound Sterling at Cambridge in Britain in the year 2015.
The Special Court for Economic Offences Wing, Egmore , Chennai had on June 20 summoned the Chidambaram clan to appear before it on June 25 in connection with this case.
The Chidambaram family had tried all tricks in their armour to prevent the Income Tax department from proceeding with the case. Nalini Chidambaram, a designated senior lawyer, had challenged the competence of the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Chennai) to sanction prosecution proceedings against them under the Black Monet Act 2015.
But the Madras High Court dismissed their petitions challenging the competence of the Income Tax Department to initiate prosecution proceedings against them.
Though their plea to the court to restrain the Income Tax Department from proceeding against them failed, Nalini Chidambaram filed yet another petition in the Madras High Court asking it to direct the IT Department to make the copies of the administrative orders issued by the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Investigation) available to them.
