Chavan says DF will capture power in Maharashtra again

With the Congress high command having made it clear that he would not be removed from his post ahead of the forthcoming Assembly polls, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday expressed confidence that the Democratic Front (DF) would recapture power in the polls with a maximum number of seats.

Talking to mediapersons a day he met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi, Chavan indicated that he would lead the Congress in the State Assembly polls, scheduled for October this year.“I met senior party leaders during the last two days and requested them to set to rest uncertainty over the leadership issue in the interest of the party’s (poll) prospects. We also discussed poll preparedness and strategy,” he said.

Declining to comment on the ruling alliance partner NCP’s clamour for equal sharing of seats in the State Assembly polls, Chavan said: “These issues are not discussed in front the media.  We will talk about it (sharing of seats) in our co-ordination committee meeting. This will be our sixth election together (both Assembly and lok Sabha). My efforts would be to ensure win in maximum seats”.

On reports about Sharad Pawar having been asked by his party high command to lead the Congress-NCP alliance’s campaign, Chavan said:  “I have no idea. My leaders have not told me so. I can’t elaborate further on the issue”.
