Changes made in sports quota admission process

Published on:

Aspirants applying under the sports quota at Delhi University (DU) for academic session 2018-19 need not register for the individual colleges and courses/subjects as once they opt for admissions under 'sports quota', on the online portal they would automatically get registered for all the colleges offering that particular sport and would also be eligible for all the courses in these colleges.

The Delhi University Sports Council (DUSC) in its bid to streamline the sports quota admissions has brought some fundamental changes in the sports quota admission process this year. Earlier, a student seeking admission under the sports quota had to compulsorily opt for the colleges offering his sports and also has to exercise his choice of subjects/courses in these colleges.

However, in the arduous process a sports quota applicant always stood a chance of missing couple of colleges and subjects/courses while applying. This acted to their disadvantage, as sometimes even after qualifying in centralized sports trail they may not be finally admitted under sports quota as those colleges in which they have not applied cannot admit them even if the seats are available with them. Moreover, even in colleges in which they have applied sometimes denied admission saying that sports seats is not available under the particular course they have applied or are already filled.

This year the sports quota aspirants will also have the liberty to choose the particular "Position" against the colleges in drop-down menu under Sports quota on online admission portal. Also for admission under the sports quota this year, Delhi University (DU) will not consider those candidates who have only the "participation" certificate at State or district level. Rather those candidates who have secured some rank/position (either I, II or III) at district or state level sports competition would be eligible to apply under the sports quota.

Delhi University (DU) under its sports quota gives admissions broadly under four categories-- international, national, state and district. While for admissions under national and international category both position and participation will be considered, admission under state and district category would be made solely on the basis of position or rank.

Also this year under sports quota both Under-19 and Under-17 category have been clubbed together. That means similar marks would be given for the same rank in both categories. Similarly for participation, both Under-19 and Under-17 will carry the same marks.

The rush for admissions will start with the opening of registration process on the online Undergraduate admission portal on Tuesday evening with the last date of submitting form being 7 June. The registration for postgraduate programme will start on May 18 and registration for research programme i.e. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)/ Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) will start on May 20. The first cut-off will be out on June 19 and the subsequent ones later on. The fifth and possibly the last cut-off will come on July 12.
