Centre trying to curb freedom of speech of JNU students: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that the BJP Government at the Centre has tried to curb the freedom of speech of the JNU students and that it is very unfortunate as the freedom of speech is a fundamental right.

“The Central Government’s move to curb the freedom of speech of the JNU students indicates the intolerance of the Government. It seems that the Central Government is trying to establish the Hinduism ideology of the RSS in India,” Gogoi said while addressing a press conference on Thursday.

“The Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani is trying to install RSS ideology in the current education policy of the country. The incident at JNU clearly indicates that the Central Government is trying to direct the country’s education system while following the RSS ideology,” he said.

“The Government has failed to prove any allegation against the JNU student leader. Although they have charged him of sedition, there is no evidence against him. In fact they are trying to curb his freedom of speech, he said adding that the student leader was also attacked while in police custody.

“They (the BJP and RSS) are trying to destroy the democracy in India. This trend is dangerous where they want to impose the RSS ideology, which is a fascist ideology,” the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, Gogoi further said that the appreciation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the 12th South Asian Games 2016 as the best staged ever in the annals of the Games has come as encouraging news for the officials of the Government of Assam who worked hard to make the event a resounding success.

“Assam pulled out all the stops to make the Games a grand success. Right from day one, our officials worked day in and day out and left no stone unturned to make the Games a great success. Credit for the Games success also goes in equal measure to the people of Assam, the sports organisations and hundreds of volunteers and their families,” he said.

Gogoi said the 2007 National Games staged during the second tenure of the present Government brought about a sea-change in the sports firmament in the State.

“The National Games in Guwahati brought about a major transportation in the sports infrastructure in the State. Several state-of-the-art stadiums that came up during the National Games have enabled the State to host prestigious events like the just-concluded South Asian Games,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Gogoi pleaded with the Prime Minister for a special package for Rs 1,000 crore for development of rural sports infrastructure in all the 219 development blocks. “I request the Prime Minister for a special package for Rs 1,000 crore for development of sports infrastructure in the development blocks. Our Government will also provide the remaining funds,” he added.
