Within hours of friends-turned-foes Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sharing the same dais — during the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Indian National Museum in Kolkata —Bengal Congress leaders on Sunday complained to him about deteriorating law and order situation in the State.

The Prime Minister reportedly assured the Congress delegation that he would look into the matter, said former PCC president Manas Bhunia.

The delegation told the Prime Minister about the “growing number of crimes against women and worsening law and order situation” Bhunia said to which Singh “showed concern” and promised to send a team of National Commission for Women.

The PM was also reported about the chit-fund menace “with the help of the ruling outfit” in the State, the PCC leaders said adding Singh said he was in the know of things.

The PM also “showed concern” regarding Union Minister Deepa Dasmunshi’s wellbeing as she was sitting on a hunger-strike demanding an AIIMS at Raiganj which was earlier sanctioned by the Union Ministry but was allegedly “being spiked by the State Government which is trying to bring it back to Kalyani near Kolkata.”

Singh backed Dasmunshi’s cause and reportedly asked her over the telephone to end her fast assuring he would take up the cause as it was a genuine one.
