Urging the Government of India to take the situation along the line of Control (loC) seriously especially against the backdrop of recent casualties in the Jammu region, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday questioned the intentions of Pakistan in upping the ante along the volatile line dividing Kashmir between the two countries.

“It seems that the intentions of Pakistan are not fair along the loC. The ceasefire must be adhered to and Government of India must take ceasefire violations seriously,” Abdullah told reporters on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of North Zone Regional Judicial Conference here.

He said that Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde is arriving in next two days to review the ground situation along the loC. “We will go to the loC to take stock of the situation there,” he said when asked about the recent cease-fire violations in the Jammu region that caused civilian casualties.

Earlier addressing the inaugural session of the three-day conference, Abdullah described sustenance of rule of law and nourishment of democracy as interdependent. He said the rule of law was paramount for democracy and it cannot thrive in a totalitarian system.

He said legislature, judiciary and the Government has to jointly contribute in strengthening the rule of law and building unsheltered faith of people in the institutions responsible for ensuring justice, equality and liberty to people.

Referring to some flaws in laws, Omar Abdullah said that different interpretations and delay in justice delivery makes common people apprehensive and their faith in the system gets eroded. The Chief Minister said that while speedy justice should be the benchmark in the courts, the alternate system of settling legal disputes through lok Adalats should be given considerable fillip.
