The CBI has taken over investigation into the custodial violence at Tihar jail last year where 18 inmates were allegedly beaten up by the prison staff.
The incident had occurred on November 21 last year at High Security Ward of Central Jail No 1 at Tihar. The agency has registered two FIRs in connection with the incident. The CBI took over the case following a directive from the Delhi High Court on May 15 this year.
The cases have been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to grievous injury and common intention against the then Sub Inspector S Muthupandi of the Tamil Nadu Special Police and other members of his 52-member team.
The court had ordered the CBI probe in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Chinmay Kanojia, who had alleged that his client Shahid Husuf, who was being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was beaten up without any reason by the jail staff.
The High Court had termed the incident as "very disturbing".
The plea has said a particular community, including Husuf, was being targeted by the jail staff causing serious injuries to him and others.
