The CBI on Tuesday ordered an internal inquiry to ascertain officials behind leakage of information relating to status of the probe into alleged disproportionate assets of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh.
Claiming that a final decision has not been taken on the issue of filing a closure report, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha said the nature of the probe changed when the SC asked it to remove the name of Akhilesh’s wife Dimple against whose name most of the assets were registered.
Sinha regretted that documents were being leaked by some vested interests from the premier probe agency even before a final call had been taken and said CBI officers involved in it would be identified by Wednesday.
The CBI officials are believed to have suggested filing a closure report in the alleged acquisition of disproportionate assets by Mulayam and his son.
“No final decision has been taken on the file pertaining to the case. The file has not even reached me. A final call is yet to be taken,” Sinha said, adding a decision will be taken according to the evidence gathered.
The inquiry against its own officials comes after the Opposition parties cried foul over the reports of
CBI’s plans to file a closure report in the disproportionate assets case against the SP supremo and his son.
The Opposition had criticised the CBI’s move saying the Government was using the CBI to seek support from it on the Food Security Bill.
Meanwhile, the CBI has decided to file a status report on Wednesday on its probe into the alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and others before Gujarat High Court and will seek additional time from a designated court in Ahmedabad to file the supplementary chargesheet in the case.
The agency is probing the larger conspiracy and the role of Intelligence Bureau Special Director Rajendra Kumar.
The sources said the CBI has enlarged its probe and has begun investigation into the role of Kumar into the alleged fake encounter of Sadiq Jamal. Jamal’s encounter is also being probed by the CBI.
