CBI not to name Amit Shah as accused

The CBI may not name Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s close aide Amit Shah as an accused in the supplementary charge sheet which is likely to be filed soon by the CBI in Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

The supplementary charge sheet is likely to detail the role of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials who were allegedly part of the conspiracy leading to the encounter in which 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan along with three others were killed, the sources said. Sources said the CBI has not been able to gather evidence to prove Shah’s direct involvement in the encounter or the conspiracy which led to it.

Shah’s name in the case cropped up after one of the main accused DG Vanzara claimed that the encounters were carried out a part of the conscious policy of the Gujarat Government towards eliminating terrorism. The CBI has recently questioned Shah in connection the allegations levelled by Vanzara in his resignation letter.

Shah, who was Minister of State for Home of Gujarat in 2004 when the encounter took place, was quizzed as jailed IPS officer Vanzara had claimed in his resignation letter that Gujarat Government was “inspiring, guiding and monitoring” every police action from “very close quarters”.
