CBI mulls exhuming bodies

In a surprise move giving a new twist to the gang-rape and killing of two cousin sisters here last month, the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) probing the incident is contemplating to exhume the bodies for going through another round of postmortem.

However, the investigating agency will have to take the permission from the local court and would also try to get consent of the family members before exhuming the bodies.

The deceased girls were buried outside the village as they were minor. CBI sources here disclosed that they would like to go for second round of postmortem after exhuming the bodies of both the girls. The CBI wanted to get the second post-mortem examination conducted as they wanted to get some doubts cleared about the rape and murder theory as floated by family members and local residents. Sources said that the CBI is probing into the honour killing angle as well as the property dispute, which had come up during probe by the UP police.

Meanwhile, the CBI conducted polygraph test of the fathers of the deceased along with another family member and a witness for the second day on Tuesday at Central Forensic Science laboratory in New Delhi.  However, protesting the move, the victims’ brother Virendra along with the members of Naya Daur Party sat on fast unto death  at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, alleging that CBI is harassing his family. They alleged that CBI is focusing on the victims rather than the accused. It may be mentioned that the CBI had already went through polygraphy test of all the five who were accused in the FIR.

The CBI sources said the statements given by the family members have some inconsistencies which need to be clarified before proceeding in the case. Two girls, both sisters, were gang-raped and then hanged from a tree outside their  Katra village in Badaun last month, leading to a national outrage. Even the United Nations and the US took note of the incident and aired their concern on the growing crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh. UP’s police top officials have also hinted that it was a case of honour killing.
