The CBI on Monday filed a chargesheet against former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and three others in a special court in Srinagar in connection with alleged irregularities and misappropriation of funds in the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).
The agency levelled charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust under the Ranbir Penal Code against Abdullah, the then president of JKCA, Md Saleem Khan — the then general secretary, Ahsan Ahmad Mirza - the then treasurer and Bashir Ahmad Misgar, an executive in the J&K Bank.
The BCCI gave 112 crore to the JKCA between 2002 and 2011 for the development of cricket facilities in the state. Of this, Rs 43.69 crore was siphoned off and misappropriated by the accused, the agency has alleged.
It further alleged that during this period, then President of Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association had connived with the Treasurer of JKCA and others in undue siphoning off the funds and its misappropriation.
The scam surfaced in March 2012 after the association treasurer, Manzoor Wazir, filed a complaint against former office-bearers, Muhammad Saleem Khan (former general secretary) and ex-treasurer Ahsan Mirza. In September 2015, the High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the scam where it was alleged that instead of utilising funds received from BCCI between April 2002 and December 2011 on developing infrastructure, they were pocketed by members.
