The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Jharkhand resident, along with his accomplice, hailing from West Bengal for allegedly forging signature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a letter which claimed he had been invited to organise a classical music programme for Independence Day celebrations here.
The two accused Pandit Swaraj Kumar Roy and Suvendu Kumar Burman were produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate here on Friday who remanded them in CBI custody till July 27.
The letter written in May last year and bearing the forged signature of Modi was sent to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) which in turn referred it to the CBI for enquiry and the agency registered a case after preliminary investigations.
"The allegations pertain to forgery of signature of Prime Minister of India on a letter purportedly issued by the PMO to the said accused for arranging classical music programme on upcoming Independence Day," the CBI said in a statement.
Searches were conducted at Bokaro steel City (Jharkhand) and Bishnupur, District Bankura (West Bengal), on the premises of accused which led to the recovery of a large number of "incriminating forged documents and articles" relating to forgery of the signatures of Prime Minister of India, the agency added.
