CBI arrests 2 in ponzi case, sniffs Rs 2K-crore booty

In a new development, the CBI probing the larger conspiracy angle of the Saradha chief fund scam on Monday arrested two senior officials of Akashdip Projects for allegedly hiding facts. The investigating officials said the two directors T Pramanik and P Chowdhury, who were arrested after five hours of intense grilling, were hiding facts in relation to embezzlement of funds worth about Rs 2,000 crores.

The CBI would also try to investigate the involvement of influential people with Akashdip, officials said adding the two directors would be produced before the court on Tuesday. The Bengal Opposition had for the past a few months being questioning the investigating agency’s alleged “slow-paced” probe. “Not a single influential politician has been questioned after Mukul Roy was grilled many months ago” CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakrabarty said suspecting an “understanding between Trinamool Congress and the Centre.”

CBI’s application for cancellation of powerful State Minister Madan Mitra’s bail was likely to be heard on Tuesday. Mitra was currently under house arrest following a High Court order early this month.
