The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has geared up to collect all conversion charges in a bid to increase their revenue. After EDMC, the North Corporation has stepped up to identify the number of mixed lands under its jurisdiction and therefore fetch the taxes in a deadline of another two months.
Officials in the corporation have said that properties of mixed land use will be identified on each of the roads. “Every day around 4-5 roads will be surveyed in a bid to find out the number of buildings which are liable to pay the conversion charges to municipal corporations,” said an official.
The Master Plan 2021 allows mixed land use and thus permits commercial activities in residential areas legal (a law which the court has declared invalid) out of judicial purview. All property holders have been asked to pay conversion charges.
Previously, East Delhi Municipal Corporation had decided to penalize nearly 4,600 defaulters including government agencies in its area which has not paid property taxes since last few years. The Corporation that is struggling to make ends meet owing to massive financial crunch claimed that Rs 300 crore is due on property tax defaulters.
Shops and establishments which were registered under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Delhi under 24 specified categories were asked to pay various charges. Previously, during the 2006 sealing drive, almost all the shops had VAT registration and the owners were paying income tax through income generated via these shops.
