To celebrate the completion of one year of launch of the Swachchh Bharat Mission and simultaneously to give a fillip to the mission, a nation-wide campaign has been undertaken with the participation of all sections of the society to rekindle mass awareness and behavioural change towards sanitary habits and practices.

A National Cleanliness Campaign was launched from 25th September 2015 (late Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay’s birth anniversary), till October 11, 2015 (birth anniversary of Jaya Prakash Narayan), with activities being taken up regularly at State, City and ward levels, to push forward the Swachchh Bharat agenda among all citizens.

Following the conclusion of the anniversary fortnight celebrations of Swachchh Bharat Mission, special theme based drives have now started across various Ministries and line departments. While October 15-31 (named as Sardar Patel United Clean India Drive) saw the transport sector (Railways, bus and other public transport stands, airports etc) being the theme of these special drives.

“The Railways were very actively involved in these drives. Various regional railways across the country undertook a range of initiatives related to cleanliness. Nukkad nataks through local NGOs and school children, ‘shramdan’, walkathons and oath-taking by railway officials, intensive cleanliness drives of major stations by railway sanitation workers, placards and banners on cleanliness marked the cleanliness initiatives,” said a railway official.

One of the feature of such a drive is to mobilise local NGOs and charitable organisations, schools, boy scouts and girl guides, and local theatre groups, in the true spirit of ‘Jan Andolan’.
