The Union Cabinet is likely to give green signal to an ambitious proposal of developing 100 low-cost airports in Tier-I and Tier-II cities across the country with an aim to realise common man’s dream, especially those from smaller towns, to fly with fares as low as Rs2,500 for an hour.
“The proposal is under the consideration of the Cabinet which is likely to clear it in its next meeting whenever it is held,” Union Aviation Minister Mahesh Sharma said on Thursday while talking to a group of selected journalists at his residence on the occasion of two years completion of the Modi Government.
All the stakeholders have given their approval to this proposal, he said.
According to Sharma, at present there are around 485 air strips of which just 84 are being used. With the RCS scheme we are trying to connect Tier II to Tire III cities. “For instance, from Delhi to lucknow, the air fares will be just Rs2,500.”
