CAA likely before 2024: BJP MP; poll gimmick, retorts Opp

There were ample chances of Citizenship Amendment Act being implemented ahead of the 2024 general elections, Bengal BJP president Sukanto Majumdar on Tuesday said.

The BJP MP from Balurghat in North Bengal said that the “CAA has already been passed only some procedural aspects and rules have to be framed … I am sure it will be implemented before the 2024 general elections.”

Majumdar’s statements triggered immediate reactions from the TMC, Left and Congress who linked his remarks to election politics. “It is clear from his statement that the BJP is trying to divert attention from the main issues like unemployment, price rise and general law and order issues in the country,” said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakrabarty said that the “by saying that the CAA will be brought before the elections the BJP has proved that it is nothing but an election gimmick … what the CAA will give that is not there presently … whether it will bring down hardships, improve hunger index, bring back jobs and reduce prices …if not then the CAA will cut no ice in Bengal.”

Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Chowdhury said “CAA was already there and they have not been able to frame the rules because there is big technical issues … they will not be implemented and the BJP is only using this as an electoral plank.”
