Terrorists covered in head-to toe burqa veil barged into a bank branch in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district and looted currency notes to the tune of Rs 5.2 lakh on Monday afternoon.

Police said Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists have been identified for their involvement in the incident.

Sources said that gunmen in burqas barged into Arwani branch of Jammu and Kashmir bank and looted the cash on gunpoint.

A police spokesman in a statement said that Hizbul Mujahideen militants barged into the bank in the afternoon and looted it on gunpoint.

“Anantnag police has registered a case and investigation was set into motion,” spokesman said adding that during the initial investigation and with the help of CCTV footage, it was found that HM militants were involved in this crime.”

“Efforts are on to nab the culprits,” he said.

There have been several attempts of looting banks and ATMs in south Kashmir region forcing the banks to minimize their cash deposits.

In one of such major strikes militants waylaid a cash van in May and killed four policemen and two bank guards in Kulgam district.

Security forces say that militants are facing cash and arms crunch that forces them to loot banks and attack police and paramilitary guards to snatch their weapons.
