Posting an objectionable picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Facebook proved costly for a local Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and a local resident of Aligarh as they were arrested on Tuesday night.

BSP leader Shankar lal Pippal and Javed Alam, both residents of Jalali locality in Aligarh posted objectionable pictures of Modi and Yogi last Sunday. Police arrested both claiming that Alam had shared the post.

Sources said the matter was brought to the knowledge of police by senior BJP leaders, including Charra MlA Ravendra Pal Singh and Aligarh Mayor Shakuntla Bharti. They raised the matter with senior police officials and demanded immediate action.

In one more case reported from Aligarh, an FIR has been lodged against former Congress MP from Aligarh, Bijendra Singh and 50 others for allegedly breaching peace during the visit of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to the city last Monday. Singh described the filing of the case as a ‘brutal attempt to crush democracy and the freedom of expression’.

He said Congress workers were only trying to hand over a memorandum to the Chief Minister regarding certain public grievances when the police prevented them and resorted to lathi charge to disperse them.
