Blasts rock Darjeeling again ahead of talks

Within hours of Bengal Government proposing talks on Darjeeling stalemate and within days of two powerful blasts shook the hill district killing one civic volunteer and injuring two others, Sukhiapokhri in Darjeeling witnessed more blats supposedly triggered by IED explosives, injuring a few persons, police said.

According to sources the blast took place at 2.15 in the night intervening Wednesday and Thursday. The bomb was aimed at the Sukhiapokhri police station but it hit a barrier and fell on the road, sources said adding “had it not been misguided the bomb would have killed a number of people.”

The blast that experts said could have been triggered to derail the proposed talks to end the Darjeeling stalemate on August 29. life in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts had been disrupted for the past 75 days following an indefinite strike called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and 12 other Hill parties in support of their demand for a separate Gorkhaland Sate.

Though there was no report of GJM the largest party in the Hills joining the proposed talks the second largest outfit Gorkha National liberation Front has offered to join the talks.

The earlier blasts saw the State Government slapping cases under UAPA on GJM chief Bimal Gurung who has since gone underground.

On Thursday’s blasts the GJM leadership said it was not involved in it. “The GJM believes in non-violence movement and has faith in Constitution,” the leadership said.
