The BJP workers on Thursday staged road blockades at Howrah Bridge and jammed parts of Bombay Road after two senior party leaders, including a party district president and a State committee member, were on Wednesday attacked by alleged Trinamool Congress goons. Their cars were smashed and two rounds of bullets were fired while they were campaigning in Uluberia a sub-division town by the Bombay Road where a by-election would be staged on January 29.

“The Trinamool is scared by the rise of BJP as an alternative in the State which is why they are taking this terror tactic to stop us from campaigning. But we will not be deterred,” said State BJP leader Shantanu Bose adding Howrah SP Gaurav Kumar refused to take action against the Trinamool goons despite repeated complaints. If he continues to do like this then we shall be forced to lodge a complaint with the Election Commission seeking his removal from the post,” Bose said.

The seat fell vacant following the death of sitting Trinamool MP Sultan Ahmed.
