BJP plans nationwide pushback against Congress over SIR, Election Commission

The BJP is preparing a nationwide political outreach drive for next week to challenge the Congress's criticism of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The campaign is expected to combine ground-level mobilisation with a digital communication strategy. Party MPs, MLAs and other leaders are likely to lead outreach efforts in their respective constituencies, explaining the BJP's position on the electoral roll revision exercise and responding to questions raised by the opposition.

To equip its leaders for these interactions, the BJP is preparing a 24-page document addressing allegations and queries raised by opposition parties. The material is expected to provide party functionaries with arguments and responses to use during public meetings and conversations with voters.

The party's counter-campaign will extend beyond the current dispute over SIR. The BJP also plans to draw attention to what it alleges were instances of the misuse of the Election Commission and other institutions under previous Congress-led governments. These claims are expected to feature in the party's response to the opposition's criticism of constitutional bodies.

Social media and other communication channels will form another part of the strategy, allowing the party to circulate its arguments beyond constituency-level events. The planned activities are expected to involve party workers and leaders at different levels, with public engagement serving as a central component of the exercise.

The initiative comes amid a political dispute over the electoral roll revision process and the Election Commission's role. Through the campaign, the BJP aims to challenge the Congress's allegations, present its own account of the issues and take its arguments to audiences across the country.
