I was raped for supporting BJP: Minority cell leader

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed confidence about some action on the part of administration in the Chanho rape incident, in which a senior party leader has alleged that she was gang-raped by more than a dozen men because she is working with the BJP, the police said on Tuesday.

The woman said she is part of a local minority wing of the BJP designed to attract Muslim voters to the party.

The incident took place in wee hours of Monday at Masmano village under Chanho police station. “Some work has been done. We are in constant touch with district administration and they have assured us action on the basis of reports,” said State party chief Ravindra Kumar Rai.

The party, however, vowed to decide future course of action after the expiry of the deadline of 48 hours issued to the administration for taking action against the culprits. The victim is undergoing treatment at Sadar hospital at Ranchi and her condition is said to be stable.

Meanwhile, police is yet to move forward in the direction of establishing crime as alleged by the BJP leader and is awaiting medical as well as forensic reports to corroborate the claim made by the victim.

The police had interrogated all accused who appeared at the police station on Monday and let them go as they all pleaded innocence. There is no fresh lead available with the police in connection with the case.

“We cannot arrest anyone unless concrete evidence is available,” said SP (Rural) SK Jha. Notably, 12 named accused, who appeared before the police on Monday had been released with some restrictions. The investigation circles around various angles, sources said.

The victim had also accused assailants of beating her husband and misbehaving with her 13-year-old daughter besides setting a vehicle on fire and fleeing with cash and jewellery.
