Bihar's 'semi-final' bypolls today

Will set the mood of State politics

Touted as the semi-final of Bihar politics, bypoll on 10 seats will be held on Thursday amid speculation which way the politics in the State would be heading in coming days. The result of the bypolls will decide the political fate of the recently forged alliance between the RJD, JD(U) and the Congress.

After the last lok Sabha polls, this bypoll on 10 seats will be the biggest political event in the State. Ahead of the State Assembly elections next year in October-November, result of these bypolls will also decide the future course of Bihar’s politics.

leaders of both the political formations have campaigned hard to score their political goal in the constituencies going to the polls. The BJP is contesting on nine while its alliance partner lJP has fileded its candidate on one seat. Under the alliance agreement both the RJD and the JD(U) have fielded their candidates on four seats each while leaving two for the Congress.

The bypolls will be held in Hajipur, Chapra, Mohiuddi-nagar, Parbatta, Bhagalpur, Rajnagar(SC), Jale, Mohania (SC), Narkatiaganj and Banka. Altogether 94 candidates including five women are in the fray. Hajipur has maximum 15 contestants while Banka and Rajnagar (SC) have a minimum of six candidates each.

A total of 26,42,407 voters will exercise their franchise in 2,422 booths. “Altogether 1,962 police officers along with 6,000 personnel drawn from the CRPF, BMP and State police have been deployed for security in the constituencies going to poll on Thursday,” said Gupteshwar Pandey, Additional Director General of Police. He also said that 40 per cent of the district police will be deployed for the polls.

leaders of both the political blocks during campaign had attacked each other using rustic puns and wits. Out of ten seats, the BJP had six in kitty while the RJD had three while one was in the JD(U). Poll observers said that the BJP in all likelihood would be retaining its numbers while the rest could go to the RJD-JD(U)-Congress alliance.
