Bihar Industries Minister Shyam Rajak has urged the Centre to open the satellite centre of National Institute of Designing (NID) in Patna keeping view the need to impart training to the local artists involved in art and handicraft.

Rajak on Friday wrote a letter to Union Minister of industries and commerce Nirmala Sitharaman. He said that handicraft culture is deep rooted in Bihar and lakhs of peoples’ livelihood is linked with it. The development of handicraft would also help eradicate the growing unemployment in the State, he said and added that in the markets only those creativities would be popular who adopt latest design and artistic flair. New experiments are being made in this sector but in Bihar the modern design techniques have not reached and the handicraft sector has not got a boost.

Rajak said that the establishment of NID would also help cataloguing of the old designs prevalent in Bihar and modernise them. He said all necessary infrastructure is available with Upendra Maharathi handicraft research centre.
