A statement by a Minister on banning alcohol in Bihar sprang surprise on Wednesday. Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma even disapproved of prohibition saying it was needed for certain sections of society.
A first time Minister Verma, whose views are totally against the policy of the State Government, said, “There are certain people who are in thinking mood like doctors, engineers etc need liquor for mental relaxation. The government should also think about them before suddenly banning the liquor.” She said that educated people do not create nuisance after drinking neither do illegal works.
The Bihar government has already committed to ban country made and spiced liquor in the first phase from April 30. Arrangements are being made to check the brewing and smuggling of this liquor and all the shops selling country made and priced liquor will be closed. The sale of only the foreign made liquor will be permitted that too from government controlled agency and as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced this would be also banned in the next phase in order to implement total prohibition.
