Bihar liquor manufacturers seek SC's clarification over stock deadline

Published on:

liquor manufacturers from Bihar approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking a clarification on whether the May 29 order by the apex court extending time to dispose their existing liquor stock till July 31 permits them to export their goods as well.

Senior advocate Salman Khurshid mentioned the matter before a Vacation Bench of the apex court comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and Deepak Gupta. The Court will hear the petition on Wednesday.

The liquor manufacturers claimed in their petition that the May 29 order of the apex court mentioned, “Time to destroy/drain the stocks is extended up to July 31, 2017. It is made clear that no further extension will be granted in future.” However, the order does not specify whether disposal of stock allows export as well.

“The issues were about the export and destruction of old stocks,” said Khurshid. He indicated that on a previous occasion too when the manufacturers were allowed time to dispose their stocks till May 31, there was no bar on export. However, with the Supreme Court order not mentioning the word “export”, the manufacturers filed an application seeking clarification of the same.
