Hyderabad city police has constituted 10 special teams to probe the biggest robbery of gold and diamond jewellery from a reputed showroom in a busy commercial and high security zone of the city.
The incident in which a gang of burglars meticulously drilled a hole in the backside wall of the Tanishq Showroom of Tata Group and looted jewellery worth Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crore) has left the citizens shocked and policemen baffled. What has left the police red-faced is that the incident occurred hardly a few kms away from the Chief Minister’s residence and within a few yards of Punjagutta police station.
Hyderabad city Police Commissioner Anurag Sarma said that the sleuths form Central Crime Station have found some clues and the culprits will be caught. “However we cannot share the details at this stage”, he said. The ease with which the gang could drill a hole using a battery operated hand-held drilling machine and enter the showroom wiping off the stock of gold and diamond jewellery has raised the suspicion that it could be an insider job.
The burglary came to light when the staff opened the showroom and noticed the hole as well as missing ornaments. Police officials said that they were going through the CCTV footage of the last one month as well as the night of the crime as the gang might have under taken reconnaissance of the scene before striking. The CCTV footage show that that the three member gang was masked and the hands were also covered in gloves.
A minor and a physically challenged person was also involved in the crime. Police officials say that there were striking similarities between Tanishq heist and the robbery in a nearby showroom of Joy Alukkas, just across the road. The police had later cracked it and arrested a gang from Mumbai.
