Bengal to decide PM: Mukul Roy

Bengal would decide as to who would be the next Prime Minister of India, Trinamool Congress feels. Unlike on earlier occasions where things were decided by larger States like Uttar Pradesh, the road to Delhi would pass via Bengal, Trinamool number two Mukul Roy said on Sunday.

The former Railway Minister who was addressing a civic election rally in northern fringes of Kolkata said, "Every time it is the States like Uttar Pradesh that decide as to who would become the Prime Minister but this time round it will be Bengal that would determine the issue."

Asserting that "the road to Delhi would pass through Bengal" where the Trinamool Congress would get the maximum number of seats" Roy said the State was on the verge of bouncing back to its glorious days by taking centre stage in the Government formation at the Centre.

Though the leader would not dwell on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Prime Ministerial designs inside sources said the party was thinking in terms of bagging "at least 35 seats" which could end up being 37.

"The current situation is that there would be no single party or group coming to power in Delhi. In that case a coalition would become an imperative to form a Central Government" he maintained adding the Trinamool Congress was prepared to discharge its duty.

Making it clear that his party was not in a mood to strike a chord with the Congress once again Roy touched the most painful nerve of the UPA iterating it had given the most corrupt Government ever in the country.

"There are verses written on the honesty and integrity of the leaders who are in power in Delhi but everyone knows about their level of honesty. They have not even spared the national wealth hidden beneath the ground" he thundered alleging how the central government was involved in the Rs 1.86 lakh crore coal scam.

Hitting out once again at the Centre for giving a rough treatment to Bengal he said they not only allowed the CPI(M) Government to borrow at their will "but are not willing to help our State to come out of the debt trap by rationalising the huge debt of Rs 2 lakh crore."
