The Bengal unit of the BJP on Sunday came down heavily on the ruling Trinamool Congress for attacking its workers and insisting the saffron outfit would emerge as a big player in 2016 Assembly elections when the ‘real poribortan’ would take place in the State.
Alleging that Bengal was fast heading the Uttar Pradesh way — where goonda raj perrevailed — BJP’s observer for the State Siddharthnath Singh said that though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should have been happy at her party’s fantastic win in the general elections by bagging 34 seats, she was actually getting nervous as a large number of votes she had managed was via rigging.
“The Chief Minister should have been happy by winning 34 seats. But the fact is she is nervous at the rising clout of the BJP in Bengal. This is because she knows that her party which has got 39 per cent vote should actually got 29 per cent had it not resorted to large-scale rigging. More than 10 per cent of their votes have come through rigging,” he said, adding Banerjee was getting nervous on account of the rising popularity of BJP and falling image of her party.
Incidentally, Singh’s statement came almost in tandem with reports of more attacks on BJP workers, this time from Basanti in South 24 Parganas where the party supporters were beaten up with rods and lathis when they were returning from a meeting.
“They asked us not to go to BJP meetings in future,” Ranjit Sarkar an injured BJP worker said. Five people were injured in the attack and had been hospitalised. The attack that took place on Saturday night came a day after the one that killed a BJP supporter at Kanoor in Birbhum district. The TMC have deined the charges.
Informing that the State BJP was eyeing the 2016 State elections, Singh said the State “will see a real poribortan in 2016”, adding in the general elections the BJP had gained lead in 24 Assembly segments despite rampant rigging. The BJP was witnessing a massive switchover from other parties with State party president Rahul Sinha conceding the party had exhausted its membership forms and was printing new ones. The party was also taking members online sources said.
