Bengal biz meet ends in 'central aid' summit

The taste of pudding was in its eating was what the Bengal Opposition told Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against her tall claims on the investment at the end of the Bengal Global Business Summit.

Even as Banerjee painted a rosy picture of future investment climate claiming the State would soon receive an investment of about Rs2.43 lakh crore with a job prospect of more than a crore the Opposition promptly questioned the veracity of her claims saying her claims were nothing but yet another attempt to befool the people before 2016 Assembly elections. While the BJP said the Bengal Global Business Summit should instead have been called Central aid summit because out of the Rs93,000 crore proposal, “Rs78,700 crore will come in the form of investment from the Centre which was currently run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Incidentally in a bid to implement the Prime Minister’s policies on no-discrimination on the issue of development the Centre had earlier declared huge investment proposals in coal, steel, infrastructure and port sectors. This, while State Opposition leader Suryakanto Mishra said, “proposals and promises should first be matched by action. We will eagerly wait to see how much of this proposed money comes to this State which has plunged into political chaos and economic turmoil.”

On the question of a proposed “one crore job will be created in another two to three years by when Rs2.43 lakh crore would be invested” Mishra said “this is not the first time she is making such statements. let us see what investment comes and then we will comment.”Curiously the much hyped meet saw none of the top industry captains like Ambanis, Adanis, Infosys, Wipro and the likes joining the party.

In fact only one Branch of the Tatas was represented. On the other hand the business meet saw delegations from countries like China coming to with a request of creating an atmosphere for Chinese goods in Bengal.Earlier, the Chief Minister said on the second and final day of the Summit that Bengal could lead the way for development in India as she had clinched an “investment proposal of Rs2.43 lakh crores in another 2-3 years time which will create one crore jobs.”
