Bengal asks Metro to ensure service on JEE Mains day

With a large number candidates having failed to appear for the JEE-Main examinations on September 1, the Bengal Government has requested the Kolkata Metro Railways ensure that the  trains services remained functional on September 13 when the centrally held entrance exams would take place.

“As there is little chance of the Metro services getting resumed before that date considering the fact that they will have to put in place all the corona protocols,” the State Government has requested to at least run the trains on the exam dates,” a senior Government official said.

A meeting involving the State Government officials and t heir Metro Railways counterparts was held on Thursday at the State secretariat Nabanna.

Earlier Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attacked the Central Governmentfor its “egoistic” attitude in holding the JEE-NEET exams allegingabout 75 percent of the candidates failed to sit for their papers.

“Our students are in great trouble. So many of them were not able toattempt JEE. That's why we had requested the central government toappeal to the Supreme Court or review the matter again so thatstudents are not deprived,” she said adding on Tuesday out of 4,652candidates for JEE (in Bengal) “only 1,167 could appear for it despiteall arrangements by the state government for them. This means only 25per cent could attempt to write the examinations and the rest 75 percent could not.”

In other states, only half of the examinees managed to turn up due tothe pandemic situation, she said. Banerjee, had been against theCentre's decision to hold JEE-Main and NEET and had urged the Centreto rethink about those who could not manage to appear for the crucialtest.
