Review over, class of 2013-14 likely to be enrolled as advocates

The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Tuesday finally conducted the long-standing inspection at the Faculty of law in Delhi University after Dean Ashwani Kumar Bansal sent the requisition last week. However, with the inspection done, it is now likely that the students of the batch of 2013-14 will be able to get themselves registered with the Delhi Bar Council.

Three law centres of the university were inspected by representatives of BCI who visited the campus at midday. The university had applied for inspection weeks after the BCI sent them a letter that their affiliation was being withdrawn and students of the batch 2013-14 would not be enrolled as advocates. According to the council, the university had not applied for inspection with the BCI after 2010.

BCI is the statutory body which regulates all law courses in the country. Bansal said problems in the faculty came up only after the OBC expansion issue. However, with the inspection now done, things should get better. He said, “Now that the inspection has happened, all those from the batch of 2014 whose degrees were withheld must now be registered.”

The law centres have been facing a lot of issues in terms of infrastructure. Students too have constantly been complaining about the poor infrastructure provided to them. Thus, the representatives from BCI also asked students for their feedback. According to Bansal, there is a new centre which is under construction but will take time to be fully built.

After the inspection, the office bearers of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) also submitted a memorandum to the BCI highlighting the problem of infrastructure in the law centres. National secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Rohit Chahal said, “The law faculty lacks basic infrastructure like canteen and drinking water. The BCI needs to take stock.” As a matter of record, the DU law faculty admits over 2,000 students per year.
